February 25-Glokenspiel

It's only chimed a few times in the 10+ years I've lived in Regina, but everyone know where and what the Glokenspiel is about.

When it works, it is supposed to chime every quarter hour. It is supposed to have over 100 songs to choose from from its computerized banks. However, like any computer built in 1985, the software and hardware is a bit out of date and a bit unreliable.

Below is the dedication inscribed on the base of the Glokenspiel:
"These bells are a gift to the City from the citizens of Regina. The project was coordinated by the Regina Multi-cultural Council on behalf of the Multicultural community.

The Regina Multicultural Council is a non-profit organization established for the purpose of promoting and supporting multiculturalism in the City of Regina. The council has a membership of over 65 ethnic groups.

The harmonious chiming of the bells is a symbol of the way in which many groups of different heritages come together to enrich the life of this city."

February 24-Go Team Canada

Olympics. Hockey. Team Canada. Gold medals. That's all that people are talking about these days. Several classmates at the U of R skipped classes to watch Team Canada's game Wednesday. I suspect the entire country will stop and watch the playoff games if Canada has a chance to win gold.

Stores across Regina are displaying Olympic red jerseys and other souvenirs to show their support of our Olympic Athletes. This one, by Jersey City, features the Team Canada Hockey Jerseys. I like what the poster says in the background: "You don't wear it; you earn it."

We'll see if the Men's Ice Hockey team lives up to this motto.

February 23-CANstruction take 3

I wanted to take a photo of the last sculpture - a pair of Olympic red mittens but they just didn't look right when I was at eye level with them.

However, they look quite good when you shoot from above. (They can be seen in the upper left-hand corner.) You can see the thumbs and the pattern on the back of the mitts from this angle. You can also appreciate the scale of these sculptures with the people walking in the foreground.

February 22-CANstruction: take 2

Well, the hard work is over. Now the voting begins.

I thought I would take another picture of one of the sculptures created by Sysco Regina and JC Kenyon Engineering. The title of the piece is called "Shoot Out Hunger". It features two hockey players (wearing Team Canada uniforms) in front of a billboard representing the Olympic rings. (You can see the inukshuk I wrote about on Friday in the background on the right.)

I wonder which sculpture will win top prize?

February 21-Kwakiutl Totem Pole

This totem pole, donated by the Kwakiutl First Nations on Canada's west coast, stands proudly in Wascana Park. The plaque reads:

Donated by the Native Indian People of British Columbia to
commemorate the centenary of the union, July 20, 1871 of the
Province of British Columbia with Canada.

Kwakiutl Totem Pole
Carved at Vancouver BC by
